Why England Has 9 Clubs in Europe This Season - and Why One of Them Still Has to Qualify

England has nine clubs competing in Europe this season - five in the Champions League, three in the Europa League, and one in the Conference League. Eight of them go straight to the league phase without playing a single qualifying match. The ninth doesn't, and the reason why is a rule that rarely gets explained: a title-holder guarantee that quietly bumped an English club out of Europa League qualifying and into a Conference League play-off instead.

Five Straight Into the Champions League

England's 5-year UEFA coefficient is currently ranked #1 - the reward for finishing top of the association rankings is five automatic Champions League league-phase places, filled by the top 5 finishers in last season's Premier League. None of them touch a qualifying round.

Three Straight Into the Europa League

Europa League places work differently - most come from a specific domestic finish or cup result rather than raw coefficient rank. Two of England's three Europa League clubs arrived that way. The third is there for an entirely different reason - see below.

The Rule Nobody Explains: How a Title-holder Bumps Someone Else

Crystal Palace didn't finish high enough in the Premier League for an automatic Europa League place. But as the reigning Conference League champions, UEFA's rules guarantee them a Europa League place anyway - a reward for winning the competition below. That guaranteed place has to come from somewhere: it bumps England's next-best-ranked club out of the slot it would otherwise have taken, and one level further down the competition ladder.

The One Still Fighting: Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton & Hove Albion were next in line for that Europa League place Crystal Palace's guarantee just took - so instead of skipping qualifying entirely, they've been bumped down to the Conference League, entering at the Play-off Round on 20 August. One win and they're in the league phase too - England would have all 9 clubs through without a single elimination. Lose, and England's European clubs drop to 8.
